CAUTION! If you have not read the Chronicles (Dragons of; autumn twighlight, winter night, and spring dawning) but want to, my review tell some things one might not want to know. This takes place (at the starting) about two years after the War of the Lance.
This is about the Majere twins, Raistlin the wizard, and Caramon the fighter. After the War of the Lance (dragons of; autumn twilight, winter night, and spring dawning), Raistlin started wearing the black robes. His brother isn't to pleased with that, but his love for his brother is strong. Now Raistlin lives in a tower of High Sorcery, he became the 'master of past and present' - the requirement to enter the tower, and even the grove around it. Raistlin was always one of my favorite characters, even though he is not very nice. I think what I most like about him, is that he is evil, but he doesn't work with the evil side.
Anyway, Caramon is now married to Tika, and they live in Solace. But Caramon has sort of fallen into depression, and isnt... himself. He has become, for the most part, a drunk - which is terribly unlike him.
As for the other hero?s of the lance; Goldmoon and Riverwind (the plainsmen) have three children and live happily. Tanis (half-elven) and Loranna (the elf) are married. Tasseloff (the kender) is still wandering. Flint, the dwarf, died in Dragons of Spring Dawning, and it is believed he is happy, sitting under a tree. Kitiara (does she count as a hero of the lance?) is still a dragon Highlord. Sturm died as well, during the war.
Tanis arrives at the Inn of the Last Home with Crysania, a cleric of Paladine. She is going to the tower of high sorcery to see Raistlin. Tanis was supposed to take her there, but he needs to go to Qualinesti for the funeral of the Speaker of Suns. So Crysania goes on her own. Tika then sends Caramon after her, and with him goes Tasseloff, and the gully dwarf Bopo.
When they arrive at the tower, they find out what Raistlin is after, and Caramon and Crysania are sent by Par-Salin back in time (Raistlin has already gone) to right before the Cataclysm. Tasseloff stays. Or - he was supposed to. You see, kender are one of the races that were not supposed to be, so it was thought that if one was to go back in time, they could change the past. Will he?
All in all, I like this book (one might guess - I rated it 5 stars). It's a bit dark, but Tasseloff (like always) brightens it up a little, and made me laugh a few times.

Time of the Twins Dragonlance Legends Vol 1 Margaret Weis Tracy Hickman 9780786931583 Books Reviews
I've said so much about this series and these characters that if you read all my reviews you probably think me a bit dodgy, but it bears saying that if you want to just lose yourself in a world of hero's and monsters, struggles and triumphs and the power of love to affect even the most power hungry of all then read on my friends...read on. Happy Reading.
It's been two years since the War of the Lance. Most of the heroes have moved on (Raistlin is pursuing his life's dream of plumbing the depths of dark magic, Tasslehoff is out adventuring (with Tanis this time, who is living as a diplomat), Tika has married Caramon and reopened the inn, serving Otik's finest spiced potatoes at the Inn of the Last Home.
Unfortunately, Caramon is despondent and forlorn, not having his brother to hang around and protect as he did in the old days. He has hung up his sword, dabbled in construction for several months and turned to dwarf spirits when this failed to mollify his despondency and crushed sense of self-worth. Being dragged upon an adventure, he still manages to sneak a final flash of the hard liquor with him.
This almost comical prelude to the main story (Raistlin journeying back to before the time of the Cataclysm with Cryania, Tas and Caramon) is, nevertheless, filled with foreshadowing and plotting from background villains such as Kitiara. The shadowy underbelly of Istar before the Cataclysm echoes the hidden and ignored poverty of most Palanthian residents. Pleased with their cushy duties and having banished "evil" to a few pockets here and there, they are willing to cast empathy and compassion aside, look past the suffering of their fellow creatures and focus instead on ogre and troll genocide.
This book gives us a taste into the tragedies that can so easily be brought forth from indifference and complacency. One cannot read it and still feel optimistic about the final outcome. What is ideal and what is achievable between now and then still remain to be seen.
I don't know why Raistlin became my favorite character, but these books about the quest for power, the allure of the dark, and what happens when you get everything you want are damn good.
Having read these books two-three times a year for a number of my early teen years, I feel they imparted a wisdom I would have lacked in life.
Another great read in the dragonlance saga. On to the next adventure! The brothers Magere are the perfect mix of good and evil! A+
This, the beginning of the "Twins" trilogy of books, is able to capture the reader and pull him into the world of Dragonlance. Despite its being a fantasy novel, it has very well-developed characters, including an overweight warrior and his evil twin, whom a reader can actually relate to. The complexity of the characters shows that the author really took time to flesh out the characters before putting pen to paper, and succeeded, by this alone, to create a wonderful read.
Of all of the DragonLance books that I've read, this is definitely my favorite, mainly because it focuses on Raistlin, who is among my favorite "villains" ever.
The narrator didn't pronounce the names and places correctly and it was driving my crazy, he did not give the characters a voice. Was flat and I didn't finish listening the book. I love the books but I'll stick to reading then hearing this narrator.
CAUTION! If you have not read the Chronicles (Dragons of; autumn twighlight, winter night, and spring dawning) but want to, my review tell some things one might not want to know.
